Another choice that you have is a laptop computer or better known as a laptop, or notebook computer at times. This is a smaller personal computer which is designed for the person who needs mobility. Next is one of those cool things it's called a tablet PC, it's a notebook, or perhaps better put a slate-shaped mobile computer. It was first introduced in the 90's, but really I don't think I've ever seen one. Its touch screen technology allows the user to touch the screen for their choices with either there finger or a digital pen, or stylus even. Very neat, it's used where notebooks are normally unable to be used.

In my opinion WiDi technology is superior to media streamers and HTPC (unless you are recording tv with the latter). It is simpler and more versatile than a media streamer, and far cheaper and more efficient than a HTPC. Use it to play your ripped DVDs on the TV, amongst other things.

UPDATE:

So I was all ready to publish this article on how great WiDi technology is, and then along comes WHDI. WHDI corrects the shortcomings of WiDi and adds a huge key advantage. The basic premise is the same, wireless transmission of your laptop's screen to the TV along with audio. While WiDi offers a nice integrated solution using the existing wireless chip in the laptop, the lag due to hardware compression of the video stream makes playing games on the TV from the computer virtually impossible. WHDI instead offers an uncompressed, lag free video stream from an external device that attaches to both the USB and HDMI ports of the laptop. No special laptop hardware is required, and it doesn't even really need to be a laptop at all. Anything with a USB and HDMI connection will work, Tablets, cell phones, anything. Since there is virtually no lag, anything is now possible, even games. As much as I wanted to love WiDi, there is just no getting around the fact that WHDI offers a better solution

This makes it difficult to play certain computer games. If WiDi technology gains popularity, there will be ample incentive for Intel to address the lag issue in future versions.

Ultimately, The One I Love is a minor work, and one that epitomizes the expression "your mileage may vary." Many readers will find it charming, not necessarily funny or memorable, but an enjoyable read nonetheless, but there are plenty of others for whom it will hold no interest whatsoever. In fact, I can see some female (and male) readers being angry with it precisely because it presents a view of women whose only real defining trait is worrying about the relationships they are in. Regardless, it is a fitting reminder that regardless of what is up on the shelves at the local bookstore or comic shop, manga is always much more than just fantasy or science fiction.

Robotech volume 9 beings with the introduction of a new character named Zor, previously brainwashed and fighting for the enemy. Though a clone, his looks and traits match those of the humans and since he no longer remembers working for the enemy, he's going through quite a lot of personal troubles as well. Due to his supreme skills, he begins working for the Robotech defense force. With this, Robotech spends a large amount of time this volume focusing on the inner personal traits of its characters. Zor finds difficulty understanding who he is and the rest of the Earth team has their questions and doubts about him too.

Of a girl picking out her outfit before a date, of a girl worrying about the challenges and difficulties of being several years older than her guy, of a young woman considering her upcoming wedding and the way her relationship with her boyfriend will change once they are married. Because of the limitation imposed by having to deal with only seven pages to tell each story, the characters are never really fleshed out: they are essentially just their issues. On the other hand, the characters, at least the women who are at the center of each story, are remarkably different. They range from schoolgirls to professionals, each with a unique look and style.

Robotech delves its deepest into the love connections of the cast during one of the episodes here as well. It shows that even during the midst of war where the future of the Earth remains uncertain, people can't help but to still show signs of loneliness and a desire for love. Strictly speaking, this doesn't make them very good soldiers but it does make it easier for viewers to relate to them.

The ongoing battle between the Earth and the Robotech Masters gets much fiercer as the series moves on. Whether or not either side is successful with each battle becomes more and more important to the final outcome of the war. Things start to become much more serious as the series nears its end with only six more episodes remaining after this disc.

Of course, the artwork of any given manga is only one half of the overall package. The very cover of this manga, with its image of a young woman in a pastel-colored dress playing with three kittens—sets the tone for what is beyond the cover. The twelve stories are each either utterly adorable… or painfully naïve; whether they are the one or the other depends entirely on your ability to deal with "fluffy" shoujo. No magical girls here, no cute talking animal sidekicks, no knights in shining armor. The common theme to the twelve is insecurity and self-doubt.

The animation quality, once again, is not very spectacular. With the large battles taking place towards the end of this disc, Robotech Masters shows its budget weakness. After being spoiled with today's great animation feats, in comparison, the fighting here looks exceedingly boring.

Thankfully, this disc focuses a lot more on the secondary characters. We get to learn a little bit more about the supporting cast and the interesting relationships they have with each other. This also means less attention is given to the main character, Dana, who is still as fickle and annoying as ever.

Sometimes humorous, occasionally brutal, and nearly always fun, the complex plotting and voluminous casting, combined with strong dubbing, animation, and musical score, make this a must-see series for fans of American mobster stories. If the remaining three volumes (space in the art box suggests that there will be four total, which presumably means that all three bonus episodes from the Japanese DVD releases will be included) are as sharp as this one then this could be one of the year's best series.

Love is a complicated subject, and the eternal subject. The One I Love is a one-volume collection of manga "short stories" drawn by Tsubaki (Mick) Nekoi and written by Nanase Ohkawa, each of which approaches some aspect of the challenges being in love—or in a relationship—presents to modern Japanese young women.

Not every second of the eight-plus hours here is consumed by bellowing warriors chopping each other up. The Soul Society is a broad playing field, providing a wealth of options for both powerful opponents and personal growth. The bubbling of Orihime's growing sense of helplessness from under her dippy exterior provides a melancholy emotional grounding for the Ishida/Orihime sequences, and the set's most memorable moment isn't a fight, but a long-belated reunion. Nevertheless, this set is a full-blooded, and often bloody, reminder that the raison d'êtreforf a shounen fighting series is quite naturally, the fighting. And it's something that Bleach does very, very well

The One I Love is unusual on at least three levels. First, it is an anthology, a slim collection of twelve "essays" with simple one-word titles like Different, Insecure and Suddenly. The essays, originally published in 1993 and compiled into a collection a year and a half later, each deal with some aspect of love and relationships. Second, it represents one of the very few instances of color in manga, even if only one of the twelve stories is colored and the rest stick to the usual black-and-white. Finally, whereas until recently, much of the CLAMP manga available in the US, such as X/1999, Magic Knight Rayearth and Card Captor Sakura featured the art of Nanase Ohkawa. The One I Love (like Wish, Legal Drug, and Suki) is drawn by Tsubaki Nekoi.

There's a substantial poster of Ichigo, and the behind-the-scenes feature—twenty minutes of interviews with and in-the-booth footage of the English main cast—is quite welcome, but other than that it's standard stuff: reams of production art, and clean opening and closing animation. Except that there is no clean version of the second opening, and only four of third closer's thirteen (count 'em, thirteen) unique ending animations are provided with clean versions.

From a purely technical standpoint, if looked at as an exercise in visual storytelling under very restricting conditions, this is an extremely interesting work. The task that needs to be accomplished is simple: tell a complete story in no more than seven pages. Of course, manga as a visual medium is uniquely suited to accomplishing such a task, since within those seven pages, there are no limits on panel number, shape, or layout. Some pages feature a simple and straight-forward layout of rectangular panels—but there are plenty of others where the layouts are much more dynamic, almost cinematic. Frequently, the simple layout collapses entirely into complicated arrangements of text, word balloons and images.

Of course, customers holding out for this box set are fully aware of the plusses and minuses of the English adaptation and of the series itself. The real question, rather, is Viz's treatment of the series. The box itself is an attractive, compact affair, with its five discs held in a faux book with five plastic “pages,” each backed with sturdy cardboard emblazoned with a fine portrait of one of the major players. Extras, on the other hand, are something of a disappointment.

Likewise—although this is more in line with CLAMP's previous works—the art very often changes rapidly from being more or less realistic (generally to illustrate what is actually happening) to a significantly more "cute" style (chibi characters and in particular, cat ears and tails) when depicting characters' thoughts and perceptions…and then, within another panel or two, jumps back to relative realism. The One I Love is not quite as experimental in terms of layout and page design as Clover, but nonetheless, it is definitely unusual.

The first volume can be obtained separately or with the cardboard art box, with the cover of the DVD case offering an amusing attempt to use period speech patterns in the advertising. The inside liner includes similarly-styled brief profiles on four prominent characters, while textless songs and an audio commentary for episode 4 constitute the on-disk Extras. The latter features the English ADR director and English VAs Caitlin Glass and Brian “Ladd” Massey in a discussion mostly about series content, performance style issues, and inspirations for this effort, which include the mobster movie Miller's Crossing.

One of the most common ways of contrasting manga with American comics has to do with story lengths. Comics, the argument goes, feature self-contained stories that are neatly resolved in thirty-two pages; the storylines in manga develop slowly through ten, twenty or more volumes. Sure enough, such a definition of manga is generally true. But, as can be expected, it is not absolute. And because it isn't absolute, any time a manga comes along that doesn't fit into the common mold, it is worth at least a look.

Funimation's English dub cast represents a mix of long-time Funi stand-bys and fresh voices, as several important cast members are doing only their first or second prominent voice role. Aside from an occasional shaky accent, though, the dearth of experience in some roles does not hamper the dub at all. The casting is surprisingly close in sound to the Japanese originals and the performances follow the delivery styles of the originals while infusing them with accents and speech patterns more appropriate to the settings and time period, the lack of which are the biggest weaknesses in the Japanese dub. J. Michael Tatum and Caitlin Glass steal the show in every appearance as Isaac and Miria, but theirs are not the only good performances.

But the series has no intention of allowing its continually growing world or plot to distract from its true purpose: to be really, really cool. Terminally hip wardrobes are the norm, even the bizarre humor (pig-riding gangsters anyone?) is strangely becoming, and the shifting fight structure (moving away from vile villains to all-powerful arch-rivals) is fine-tuned to maximize each character's cool-posing impact. The balance of each fight still tilts heavily towards predictability, though the shift in structure does heighten tension and even occasionally (shock!) surprises. But heck, what is predictability when arrayed against cheer-from-the-stands coolness? Sure you know that each opponent will tap into successive reserves of battle moxie, but they look so impossibly good doing it that it really doesn't matter.

The artistry may not represent the finest of achievements in character or background design, but its style serves its purpose well, as it has little trouble crafting an easily distinguishable cast or depicting convincing blood splatters.
The animation stands on the high end of the scale as TV series go, including a couple of impressive point-of-view shots in certain fight scenes, some nice fight choreography, and minimized short cuts.

Cross-hatched character designs, spiffy duds, and the eerie emptiness, suffocatingly low sky, and washed-out colors of Soul Society combine surprisingly well with the series' oddball humor, with its heavy reliance on the series' peculiar brand of comic deformation, but the real hilarity is still back on Earth. More specifically, in an episode that details the misadventures of Ichigo's sisters and utterly idiotic TV psychic Don Kanonji. It's one of the funnier episodes to serve as shounen filler, and a bracing reminder that even at its darkest the series hasn't completely lost its sense of humor.

Brain's Base, whose other work can be seen in titles like Demon Prince Enma, Innocent Venus, and Shin Getter Robo, gives its characters and setting a distinctive look heavily influenced by classic caricatures of mobsters and American Depression-era cities and mostly devoid of anachronistic elements, unlike the similar time period Chrono Crusade; it looks like character designer Takahiro Kishida (also from Koi Kaze) actually did his homework on appropriate period costuming. The artistry also uses a lightly muted color scheme that avoids any hint of typical anime garishness.

Though humor does find its way into Shiro Sagisu's score, bouncing fun isn't what it's most memorable for. Rather, it's how Abe spices the fights with liberal (and smartly-deployed) doses of Sagisu's rocking guitars that lingers. Ichigo's blazing guitar theme in particular has evolved into a full-blown rock anthem about (quite literally) how great it is to be an ass-kicking hero—to be deployed whenever he makes his inevitable last-minute entrance. It's a strategy that would seem cheap were the winding of tensions preceding his entrance not so damnably effective, making his flashy heroics, and their musical prelude, somehow unutterably satisfying.

The style and plotting alone might carry the production, but the storytelling also finds support from a great jazz-based musical score. The opener “Gun's & Roses” by Paradise Lunch, whose visuals include key scenes from the previous episode starting with episode 3, is an up-tempo jazz number so much in the spirit of Cowboy Bebop's “Tank!” that it has a similar potential to be an anime classic. Closer “Calling” is a melodic Yuki Kajiura arrangement with more ordinary visuals. In between the score liberally sprinkles period jazz themes with harmonica pieces and more intense numbers to create a balanced, easily adaptable sound.

The remainder of the soundtrack is a mix of subliminal muttering, atonal guitar, and industrial noise that underlines the series' supernatural overtones, along with two opening and three ending themes. UVERworld's propulsive opening succeeds the uber-popular Orange Range with grace, while the second closer introduces viewers to Home Made Kazoku, originators of Eureka Seven's superb second opener. The other two closers are eminently enjoyable but standard pop tunes.

For all the fun factor, though, this is actually a pretty brutal series. Its TV-MA rating is well-earned through occasional displays of intense graphic violence, including scenes of a seeming child's head being blown off, a rat smashed with a hammer, a man's face literally pummeled into a bloody pulp, characters riddled with bullets, and a man waving around an arm whose forearm has been reduced to its bones. Granted, these scenes are only flash points and not constant representations of content, but the series' ability to smoothly mix ugliness and light-heartedness without either seeming forced or awkward is amazing.

Viz's solidly acted, meticulously casted, faithfully scripted, and smoothly delivered dub is a testament to how far the company has come since the lackluster days of Ranma ½, the debacle of Maison Ikkoku, and even the rocky opening of Bleach itself. There are of course departures from the original—Ganju is more serious, Yoruichi loses his distinctive speech pattern—but they have minimal impact, and with Rukia playing damsel in distress the entire time, her variances in personality (or lack thereof) are no longer an issue.

Director Noriyuki Abe and manga-ka Tite Kubo don't release their stranglehold on rough-edged coolness, even as the budget of the series gets a noticeable second-season boost and it begins dabbling in the kind of attenuated fight structures that have derailed many a lesser series. The inclusion of spinning cameras and slick slo-mo has in no way lessened Abe's impeccable action timing, impaired his edgy editing, or blinded his eye for how to use Kubo's rangy, punk-tough character designs, and he keeps the multiple-episode fights moving at a hopping pace.

Aboard a ship in 1711, a group of alchemists summoned a “demon” that gave them an immortality elixir, but they quickly realized that they posed a threat to one another and dispersed across the world. In Depression-era New York City the immortals gradually gather together again over attempts by some to replicate the original immortality formula, in the process accidentally either directly or indirectly involving numerous other individuals, including robbers, made men, Mafia bosses, cultists, psychopaths, and the female homunculus servant of one of the original alchemists.

All in all, this was an excellent, plot-driven installment to MPD-Psycho that takes the momentum of volume five and then puts the petal to the metal. While remaining true to its theme and overarching narrative style, it manages shed some serious light on a slew of the series' most pressing mysteries to date while leaving us on balanced on the edges of our seats, simultaneously dying for more and terrified of what is to come.

Events come to an early head in late 1930 on board the new transcontinental train Flying Pussyfoot when the crossing paths of the robbers, psychopath, cultists, other thieves, an immortal, a senator's wife and daughter, and agents secretly escorting a special bomb create a potentially grossly bloody situation, while in 1931 and 1932 a girl seeks information on her missing ruffian brother.

While an up close and personal exploration of the contents of a woman's skull or a man's abdomen is admittedly a pretty neat trick, any master of the horror genre can tell you that the scariest thing in the world is that which is not shown. Nothing we see on the page can ever frighten us as much as what we see only in our minds' eye, and in this volume, the worst of all possible outcomes is left just over the horizon. Bravo.

The above synopsis only hints at how convoluted this series actually is, and indeed, the synopsis explains more about what's really going on than the first four episodes actually do. Knowing the basic outline about the immortals and the Elixir of Life goes a long way towards helping make sense of the first volume, but in the end it does not really matter much. The first volume is so much fun to watch that making full sense of it is not (yet) necessary for enjoying it.

As always, Sho-U Tajima's artwork is cool and clean—elevating acts of murder to sublime, aesthetic cruelty. Content aside, it is elegant, sensual, and instantly, stylistically recognizable. But in spite of the confident, fluid lines, there is a paradoxically hard-edged quality to the buildings and bodies portrayed. It was a pleasure to note that, with the exception of the nude shocker in the beginning, volume six thankfully dials down the extremes of violence a few notches.

In any lesser production the approach of jumping haphazardly around between the stories of nearly two dozen named characters (18 of which are introduced in the opener) and three different years (1930, 1931, and 1932) would come off as scatterbrained, but Baccano!'s producers show a deft talent for managing all of the disparate threads by hinting at ultimate results while showing how things developed in that direction and how these threads are all gradually becoming entwined.

Cut to Miwa, on a plane with the rest of her class, on their way back from a school trip to the Philippines. She tries to initiate a complementation, but the person that serial killer Umemiya thinks is Tetora is actually a random drugged boy. However, Gakuso is not concerned. A hijacker has taken over the plane, but there is a person looming behind him—a person we have not seen since the end of volume five… (One guess as to whom that would be.)

(Given that the director-writer team for this also produced the masterfully-written Koi Kaze, the quality level should be no surprise.) Watching the first four episodes is an experience in gradually assembling the story piece by piece in a vertical as well as horizontal direction, and it can be a fascinating exercise.

Forget that Viz's definition of a season doesn't tally with the original Japanese season breaks: nestled in between two of the series' obligatory training sequences, this twenty-one-episode box set is an unsullied slice of Bleach at its skull-cracking, sword-fightin', shounen-action-cool best. Opening with Ichigo and his crew's entry into the Soul Society, the box set begins with the series on the cusp of a deepening of its world, and follows it straight through an unrelenting procession of fights and the careful unfolding of a new and complex world, culminating in the inevitable cliffhanger that simply screams for the follow-up episode.

Nearly a year has past since Kazuhiko Amamiya disappeared, and Onihigata is ready to pull the plug on the Isono Criminal Research Lab. Even so, Machi remains confident that Amamiya will return. But her confidence is shaken when the stalker from her past resurfaces to blow up more people who have caused her the slightest inconvenience. Something isn't quite right, though. Could the person who is truly behind the killings be…Miwa?! Machi and Sasayama penetrate the secret stronghold of the Gakuso Society and learn about their secret genetic engineering projects. Apparently the key to the ultimate killer is the union of the Shinji Nishizono personality with his female counterpart. That counterpart is Miwa. Every Soul reaper in the city is on their tail, and Ichigo's old nemesis Renji Abarai makes an appearance, but that's the least of the lad's worries. Towering, carnage-loving Captain Kenpachi Zaraki is on the prowl for the most powerful of the intruders, and unfortunately for Ichigo, that happens to be him. How do you fight a man who is feared even by his powerful allies? With a really big sword, of course.

To the undoubted delight of faithful readers of MPD-Psycho who have become impatient with the series' superficial spectacle of dismemberments, decapitations, and disembowelments, the plot of volume six, as they say, thickens. A lot. There is also a major revelation to be found here, which, if not strictly a surprise to veteran suspense readers who were surely wondering if Miwa was ever to have a purpose beyond jailbait otaku eye-candy, definitely adds to the thrills and chills. Author Eiji Otsuka has outdone himself.

Healed, and in full control of his newly-trained Soul Reaper powers, Ichigo heads to the Soul Society accompanied by new comrades-in-arms Chad, Ishida and Orihime. Led by talking cat Yoruichi, they charge full-tilt into the homeland of the Soul Reapers, intent on stopping Rukia's impending execution. After hooking up with local punk Ganju, the group is split up—quite involuntarily. Chad, Ishida and Orihime take the prudent course and sneak around the back alleys, while Ichigo, and Ganju head straight for trouble.

The richness of the plot in this volume is quite a surprise, actually; manga that begin on page one with a full-color shot at crotch-eye level of a nude teenage girl aren't typically characterized by their ahem cerebral pleasures. But the ante gets upped almost immediately when we find out that the crotch in question is Miwa's, and that she has been “awakened”—to a tremendous amount of gloomy, misanthropic alienation. Like Toguchi before her, it's clear that she is a time bomb that has just begun ticking. Well, to be more specific, she was at the doctor's to get something problem with her right eye checked out. Ri~ght.

Stepping On Roses remains a tongue-in-cheek story that isn't quite as romantic as it wants to be and considerably more one-sided for the heroine then some may enjoy. But, while the majority of the cast doesn't offer up a plethora of reasons to like them, it still has a bunch of reasons to keep enjoying their misadventures. It's a little shallow and silly but full of eye-candy and amusement that makes it a fairly fun diversion all the same.

The true potential Miwa has to rock MPD-Psycho's world, though, is not obvious from the get-go. We are momentarily distracted by government testing of Tetora Nishizono's ability to swap personalities with other people and by the serial killer a la mode, who turns out to be the bomber-stalker from Machi's past. As usual, we see him take out a bunch of innocent bystanders before getting taken out himself. Then, about halfway through the volume, things start to come to head in a big way.

Still, this remains a book completely focused on watching Sumi face one scenario after another that she can't control, be it a party full of critical stares or a brief return to her chaotic home-life. There's definitely something to be said for genre though. Was Stepping On Roses intended to be taken seriously, then it would have a huge problem on its hands. If however, one reads it with the suspended belief intended for such a romantic-comedy, then you just may have an acceptable formula. The artwork, which is ripe with beautiful details (most notably on Sumi and her English-style hair and clothing) is a part of what makes the series so easy to keep on reading while the humour comes in consistent pockets to keep the story from ever being too absorbed by its less than chivalrous subject matter.

Machi and Sasayama are entrusted with Tetora, but the Gakuso Society quickly catches up with them, revealing to Machi by implication that her father was involved in upper echelons the organization. On the Gakuso's ocean liner, they learn that the XY Shinji Nishizono personality is not complete until it combines with the XX personality held by Miwa. The completed personality will then become Lucy Monostone, the perfect killer.

While the last regular episode does ultimately bring the series to a proper ending, it also leaves some nagging questions unanswered, such as the exact nature of Kaname's Whispered ability. At the time of this writing no word has come about possible further animation for the franchise, but the final episode does leave the window open for that possibility. If this is to be the last animated FMP content, though, then it certainly could have done much worse. This volume may not be as strong in its writing as the previous two, but it is a respectable close-out for the series.

If one looks at Sumi as the story's ‘Rose’ then she's definitely being stepped on. Her personality is at least more likeable than one may think and her special kind of spunk keeps things lively while also a little different. She still needs a wake-up call but her acceptance and attempts to deal with her situation is actually more surprising than it is frustrating, perhaps simply because she breaks the mold of so many other heroines that you'd expect to give the men a good kick to the nethers instead of trying to face the results of their own decisions. She made a choice based on what she thought she had to and she's trying to deal with it. It's not the easiest thing to watch but it's admirable to a point.

The interior cover sports bonus artwork, while the booklet this time includes profiles and an art gallery for some key characters and equipment and two pages of Story Files. It also, unfortunately, includes the return of the hard-to-read print seen in volume 2.

Also recurring in the story is Soichiro's worlds-biggest-fan and butler. His flamboyance and Master-infatuation is an amusing side quirk to the story that proves good for a giggle but never an outright distraction. While being in on Soichiro's plan to get Sumi and Nozomu involved with one another, he does at times seem genuinely interested in seeing true love blossom – either that or his acting is simply really good and he just enjoys the potential opportunity to wear a dress himself.

The musical score is at its best in the sillier scenes in the bonus episode, while it disappears for long tracks in episode 11 and 12; such scenes do not require music to set the mood however, so it was a good choice. In places where it is present the soundtrack relies on standard franchise themes, and the opener and closer remain unchanged. The English dub provides no letdown from previous volumes, with the highlight this time being Gates' dialogue involving the twins in the last episode. All the English actors once again prove capable of delivering on the more emotional content, as well as having a bit of fun in the OVA. The English script through these episodes is somewhat flexible but never strays too far.

Sochiro's proven bad enough at times but then there's Sumi's brother – a womanizing playboy who wastes away what little money he and Sumi have ever had on dressing rich and gambling. In his sister's absence, he leaves an abusive girlfriend at home to tend to their many rescued-orphans while he gallivants elsewhere. He's the kind of character you wish you could smack regardless of, and likely much more because of, his oh-so-innocent-me ignorance. His confrontation with Soichiro regarding the treatment of Sumi is another harking moment to the chauvinism of the story that makes it hard to stomach sometimes. His appearances are minimal but they're no less exasperating.

As ever for the franchise, the sharp, vibrant artistry (even when showing darker-hued scenes) and solid animation provide for a pleasing visual experience. Lamba driver special effects in the climatic battle scenes are suitably impressive, and the animation adds in some neat tricks if one watches carefully with them. The OVA episode in particular shines in the exaggerated reactions of crew members, Tessa's luxuriously pretty look with her hair down, and a few amusing details that can pass so quickly they can easily be missed if one is not especially alert.

Nozomu is definitely the white knight of the series, courting Sumi in a kind-hearted manner. He's obviously the romantic type, swept away in his emotions and eager to sweep Sumi off her feet away from the abusive Soichiro. There is however the occasional panel that hints there may be more to him then we've seen and Soichiro clearly has an understanding of Nozomu that speaks to past occurrences. Still, Nozomu is the closest thing to a saving grace for Sumi in this series where she constantly finds herself surrounded by men out to use her for their own gain.

The extra-length bonus episode, by comparison, marks a return to the humorous, free-wheeling style seen in the Fumoffu? episodes. It not only provides the volume with its requisite quota of fan service (Tessa has never looked better!) but reveals highly amusing insight into some important cast members; we get to find out who is a closet otaku, for instance. The cost of the volume is almost worth it for this episode alone.

Throughout the book, both readers and Sumi are offered further glimpses at Soichiro's life until now. From the death of his parents to the situation behind his survival, several factors begin to fall into place regarding his personality today. His motives however, still remain a predominant mystery despite the outright explanation he delivers. Is the story really giving it to us that easily? Then again, he probably isn't expecting his own budding feelings for Sumi to put a dent in his plan. Either way, his constant disapproval of Sumi's efforts to adhere to his expectations, and his intentionally threatening come-ons, make him a less than admirable character. Moments where Sumi causes him to take pause with her earnest caring does border on endearing though.

Sweet affect, of course, isn't the only avenue of S.A's feel-good attack. No summation of the show's qualities would be entirely complete without a mention of its pervasive humor. It's a very funny show when the mood takes it, and a mildly funny one even when the mood doesn't. KEI and Hikari's reunion, though one of the series' romantic pillars, is still done in part with Hikari dressed in the world's ugliest bunny suit. Sight gags aren't the only thing that director Yoshikazu Miyao is good at (his grasp of how to high-fructose his romantic syrup with big shiny eyes and comely blushes is excellent, as is his eye for grandiose climactic compositions), but it is probably what he's best at.

Knowing the series' existence depends on it, Nostradamus's Key, wily thing that it is, continues to elude Maya and Bunmei. They investigate a UFO hoax looking for it, to no avail. They take a break from the search to help out a little ghost girl, which naturally doesn't help. They investigate some masks. No dice. Too-good-to-be-true cutie Mikaze tells Bunmei that Maya is the Key. Which turns out to be bogus just as surely as she turns out to be too good to be true. Back to square one, though this time with indestructible granny-demons, a mob's worth of lynch-happy townspeople, and one scary witch on their tails. By this time Maya is pretty sure what Nostradamus's key is, but getting rid of it won't be easy—and not for the reasons she once thought.

The series' earnestness takes care of that. Its whole-hearted support of uplifting school-life clichés is definitely hokey, and often embarrassing, but it's also endearing. The show just wants you to feel good, and it makes no bones about its ambitions or their limits. It doesn't care that its emotional resolutions lack grace or that its every move stinks of the corpses of a dozen better anime, and by the time it delivers its final, physics-defying bolt of bald romanticism, neither will you. If you want to fault it for all the complexity and creativity it discards while getting you to that happy state...well, that's puppy-punching.

The problem with investing every ounce of your script's quality in a single character is that when you violate the integrity of their character you wreck your entire series along with it. Mishandling such a character is tantamount to suicide, which you would think would give Occult Academy's writers pause when laying their ham-hands on Maya. No such luck. By series' end they've quite magnificently cut their own throats.

But for all its artificiality, S.A has a strange charm. It's particularly evident here in its second half. As it methodically pairs off its characters, running them gently through the wringer, the show achieves a kind of sweet affect. There's no law saying that regurgitated simplicity precludes characters being well-defined and cheerable, and S.A's are both—especially Hikari. The scene where Akira begs KEI to take a hit for Hikari before she destroys herself banging against the wall of his family's wealth, blaming herself for every failure to batter it down, is both touching and true to character; not an easy combination when your characters are paper-thin and your plot even thinner. And the sweetness?

It isn't all the doing of these six episodes. There've been rumblings since the introduction of Mikaze that all was not well with the series' spirited lead. She's been given to displays of petty jealousy and uncertainty, to say nothing of her progressive acquisition of tsundere baggage. At the time though, they seemed minor chinks in the armor of one of anime's stronger (recent) female leads. Little lapses like that aren't just forgivable, but can actually add charm to a character whose will is steel and whose default attitude is disdain—occasionally punctuated by violence.

The plot is one enormous wash of aged clichés, beginning with its super-special group of rich, wonderfully wonderful idols and running right up to the "go on without me!" shonen silliness during the final showdown at Takeshima's London mansion. It sneaks elements from everything from Ouran High School Host Club to Kare Kano, and never does anything consistently superior with any of them. Too often its (borrowed) emotional manipulations slip over the line from heartfelt to hokey, and its (borrowed) relationships are slow to develop and clumsy when they do.

The problem arises when it becomes obvious that the writers aren't artistically denting her armor but rather testing their axes in preparation for a full-on dismemberment. The exact moment when that becomes obvious will vary, but most will likely notice it around the time when Maya's usual anti-occult slurs in the next-episode previews soften to a saccharine "I'll keep the occult safe." It's just a small step from that to giving her gooey center free reign, after which it's only a matter of time before her once cutting personality falls into squidgy ruin.

For the record S.A is a big heap of borrowings. Finding originality in S.A is the proverbial search for a needle in a haystack—sans needle. The series was conceived in some sort of reality-vacuum, where the only points of reference lie in other anime series. Maki Minami's cast of oddballs are base anime stereotypes dressed in even more derivative anime quirks: the secretly cuddly hard case with a weakness for animals, the shy girl who communicates via sketchpad, the delicate bishonen with a dark alternate personality.

Witnessing that transformation, from budding dominatrix to nice normal girl, is among the more awful experiences in recent anime. There's no denying that Maya is less abrasive once she's made the transition, but she's a lot of other things too: clichéd, passive, even boring and, dare I say, pathetic. And the writers are just getting started. The series' sappy last moments, during which the true extent of Maya's devolution is revealed, may be the only time this former horror hybrid genuinely makes your skin crawl.

Curvy bishoujo artwork is about the only thing this series does decently, and even then, there's plenty of better material in the same genre. Again, this is the quick hormone fix we're talking about, with essential parts of the female anatomy strategically placed for visual consumption. (Perhaps the layout deserves some credit as well, then.) As to the quality of the draftsmanship—it's passable, but not outstanding; the impossibly round breasts, swimsuit-model waists and pouty baby faces are only drawn "good enough."

A little bit of heartbreak and a lot of struggle lies between all of them and romantic bliss, but the bliss of everlasting friendship may prove even more elusive. Because, Machiavelli-wise, Kei's family is doing its utmost to sever him from his SA comrades and spirit him back to their London headquarters to serve as evil headmaster to their conglomerate. And they won't balk at destroying the SA to get him there. Can Hikari's customary stubbornness and blossoming feelings save the SA, and Kei? Of course they can.

The bold, thick lines outlining the characters add a bit of stylistic flair, but everything else is straight out of the romantic comedy how-to book, from the mostly rectangular paneling to the suburban backgrounds to the nondescript male characters. It's the artistic equivalent of mushy, tasteless comfort food, liked only for its familiarity and not because it's doing anything special.

What can't a group of ultra-smart, grotesquely rich students handle? Well, love first of all. And secondly the Machiavellian manipulations of their own families. Love-wise, Akira ponders her relationship with Tadashi, Jun is victimized by an ex-suitor of Kei's, and Megumi makes a very odd choice in beaus. And of course Kei is doing his level best to make his feelings known to thick-as-bricks Hikari.

Del Rey's oversize printing for Mature titles (this one shows some frontal nudity) happens to be a good strategy for enjoying the cheesecake art; 8.25 inches x 5.5 inches adds that extra level of turn-on when it comes to panty and swimsuit drawings. Even a lackluster series like this one gets the quality treatment, with clear, straightforward dialogue, and a glossary of cultural notes that explains Japan's unique customs for celebrating Western holidays. Sound effects are left in the original Japanese, with small, plain-font translations next to them, and the print quality is sharp throughout.

By the end of this set Tears finally has its core cast completely and firmly established, so unsurprisingly it seems to be on an upswing at that point. The realities of the format will probably limit how much better it can get, but it is still an enjoyable and good-looking series likely to appeal to fantasy fans. It is not among the best titles out there but is definitely worth a look.

Two volumes in, and the new Gacha Gacha storyline isn't much of a revolution. If anything, it's a de-evolution, appealing to the basest instincts and providing only enough tease to keep its target audience coming back for more. But why bother coming back when all it's got to offer is a half-hearted comedy that can't even make good use of an instant-win premise? There's got to be more to Akira's life than getting horny every time he sees Sakuraba undress, or throwing himself into a panic when he has to switch between Akira-chan and his usual self.

Extras and release format are typical of recent Sentai Filmworks/Section 23 releases: clean opener and closer on the first of two disks set facing each other in a plastic case about the thickness of a normal DVD single. Only one grammatical error was noticeable in the subtitles this time, but it did confound an entire sentence. There is, of course, no English dub.

Unfortunately, that potential is never explored, and hope is fading fast. Springtime may be in the air for the next volume, but the only thing that'll be good for is girls wearing fewer layers of clothing. Strange as it may be to say it, that's a terrible waste.

The musical score certainly does not lack for ambition; if anything, it gets too energetic and dramatic at times, especially in earlier action scenes. Opener “Free and Dream” by Suara and closer “Blue Sky, True Sky” by Aira Yuhki, both solid J-rock numbers, bookend each episode. Notably, the identity of the little girl who is featured prominently in both the opener and closer visuals does not even get hinted at until near the end of this set. The Japanese vocals, though solid, are also very typical and thus unlikely to be memorable.

Wintertime is every manga-ka's free pass. Why worry about plotlines when you can let seasonal holidays write them for you? Christmas, Valentine's, the first sakura of spring—the only thing Gacha Gacha misses in this volume is New Year's, and that's probably just because pre-empting it with a hot springs trip allows for more fanservice. Otherwise, it follows every possible formula in the December-to-April stretch, making it more of a themed cheesecake illustration book than any sort of story comic. If you know anything about the first series, and bothered enough to pick up this loosely-based continuation, then you already know what to expect: maximum boobs, maximum pantyshots, and zero intelligence.

There are other places, too, where the series shows a little more promise than normal. Octavia's conflict with Lidia may be predictable in execution but still plays out with surprising effectiveness, as does the way Octavia comes to join the merry crew of Gaels. The unlikely friendship which starts to form between two prominent characters is a pleasant surprise, and in a few places the writing comes up with some pleasingly strong lines and impressive sincerity.

But let's not even worry about the cerebral aspect for now. This is a series that ought to be tested on a much simpler level: does it entertain? The answer is a frustrating "almost"—it's almost romantic, at least when Sakuraba drops the slightest hint of liking Akira (as a guy); it's almost funny, when Akira gets into one of his/her gender-switching scrapes. The only truly clever moment is when Akira is trying to sell Christmas cakes and discovers that being a cute young girl beats any sales pitch any day—so funny because it's so true.

Given its faithfulness, fans of the manga will know that the series won't get any better than this. That knowledge is as close as this set gets to a fault. Well, that and the licensing problems that presumably prevented Viz from using David Sylvian's creepy original closing. Very few series can knot the gut the way Monster can, and fewer still while simultaneously knotting your brain and breaking your heart. If that doesn't sound like your definition of a good time, look elsewhere. To everyone else: welcome to Tenma and Johan's world. Don't expect to be released anytime soon.

The rest of the time, however, "almost" just isn't good enough, and what we're left with is a parade of stale half-jokes and generic hot girl drawings. Let's face it, the main reason this series is running is because young males will buy it for a quick hormone fix, and if there happens to be some semi-interesting story about a guy who likes a girl except he also happens to turn into a girl, that's just bonus material.

Viz goes for a similar level of anal fidelity. Their English adaptation is one of their most carefully cast and deliberately accurate in recent memory. Only a bare minimum of alterations are made to the dialogue; enough to stave off unnaturally cumbersome phrasing, but not enough to piss off even the most sensitive viewer. The performances range from good (any number of creaky old ladies; Tenma; most of the secondary cast) to superb (Doug Erholtz's slippery Otto Heckel; Keith Silverstein's grotesquely warm Johan). It's easier to pick holes in than the Japanese, but not appreciably so.

If this were simply a story that reached occasional heights of mediocrity, that would be fine. But every now and then it shows flashes of what it could have been, and that's when it gets really disappointing. For example, there could be so many chances for Akira to discover the peculiarities of what it's like being a girl—the Christmas chapter does that with the cake scene. Instead of expanding on the idea, however, the next two chapters involve Akira leering at naked girls, getting naked in female form, and getting caught up in an unrequited love polygon ... boring, brainless stuff that never gets anywhere.

Tears does separate itself at least a bit from its kin, however, and one of the places it does that is with Arawn. From the first moment he appears in human form, he gives off a vaguely different vibe, one that faintly suggests of a lingering sorrow and more firmly suggests of a kindness and nobility belying his common eye-rolling and status as the Demon King; that he has such ardent support from the elves who pop up also implies that perhaps the whole “Demon King” thing is just a load of ancient propaganda spun by his past enemies.

With one exception: Johan. Johan's motivations aren't comprehensible by any human standard. That isn't a criticism; because Johan isn't human. Johan is a monster. As intelligent as the rest of the series is, it is in Johan that it crosses the line from smart to brilliant. He is a creation of such genius that he almost lies outside of the boundaries of the story, a bogeyman who could conceivably be called upon to scare bad children straight. It is he who pushes the series beyond mere thrillerhood into the realm of dark mythology.

It also has an obligatory collection of stock personality types: a hotheaded character (Arthur); a character who's almost impossibly kind-hearted (Riannon); an uncouth, hard-drinking female wild child (Morgan – and really, this is a vastly overused cliché across all anime genres right now); a character with encyclopedic knowledge (Ogam); a shy and seemingly hopeless beauty who shows surprising competence in certain areas (Llyr); a cold, businesslike beauty (Octavia); and of course the expected cute complements (the other elves).

He's an abomination risen from the ashes of the Cold War to cast a bone-chilling shadow over Monster's world, a presence of such cold, omnipotent evil that he is more analogous to the dark gods of ancient tales than to any person. It is in his presence—or more accurately, in his black shadow—that the series hits its chilling heights, that it achieves a primeval resonance, like a nightmare recounted in moonless dark.

Tears shares structural similarities to other series in the game-based fantasy subgenre, too. It dishes up an expected mix of battle sequences, magic, and occasional humor flavored with suggestions of hidden plot agendas and occasional flashbacks, while encounters with old adversaries help provide some character depth. In fact, one could make a checklist of common components in series like this and check off nearly all of them here.

If the series has a weakness, it's in its unhealthy fidelity to Naoki Urasawa's original manga. Director Masayuki Kojima made faithfulness his watchword in adapting Monster, and faithful he is. In fact, calling him faithful is an awful understatement; kind of like calling those widows who used to bury themselves in their husband's graves faithful. Like clockwork each episode covers exactly two chapters of the manga: there isn't a scene left out, only a handful added in, and as far as I can tell not a line of dialogue changed or omitted.

Arawn gradually being surrounded by a near-literal harem of beauties all fiercely loyal to him (at least two are technically his wives!) harkens back to the series' ero game days, while the varied skill sets and improbably lavish costuming practically scream a roster of RPG archetypes; present so far are a healer (Riannon), an archer (Morgan), a barbarian-type (Arthur), melee soldier-types (Octavia and the antagonist Lidia), a heavy blade type (the antagonist Gaius), a wizard-type (Ogam), and some elves who mix melee and magic components.

Kojima obsessively recreates Urasawa's visuals, from his realistic, idiosyncratic designs, to his carefully-crafted compositions and fondness for expressive angles. There's nothing overtly wrong with that—in fact, given the quality of the manga, it's hard to imagine doing it any other way. Nevertheless, particularly for those already familiar with the comic, watching what is essentially a careful reproduction of the original can seem a waste. At least at first.

That Tears is based on a tactical RPG for the PS3, which was itself a more family-friendly revamping of an earlier PC-based ero RPG, should be no surprise to anyone familiar with past anime adaptations of either game type, as many structural details allude to both origins.Most of the first ten or so episodes even have a “gather the party” feel to them that is the foundation of game-based series. In fact, in many senses this first half has a similar feel to the first half of Utawarerumono, another fantasy series with similar origins.

It doesn't take long, however, for the series to cast the same spell as its literary precursor. Madhouse's dark, supple animation is more than up to the job of capturing, and even improving on, the cinematic quality of Urasawa's art. Kojima's decision to use actors with experience in live-action dubbing gives the dialogue veracity, and Kuniaki Haishima's dissonant score adds immeasurably to the series' hair-raising atmosphere. One look at the dead eyes of a pair of suspiciously helpful cops, a single earful of Inspector Lunge's richly intoned suspicions, and you'll forget all about comparing print with celluloid.

How is evil created, and to what lengths are we justified in the pursuit of its destruction? Timely and knotty, Monster's moral paradoxes have no easy answers, and it offers none. Which is as it should be. And yet, through all of the human experimentation, greedy carnage, and righteous homicidal urges, the series somehow keeps its moral compass oriented due north. It never loses sight of the humanity of its characters, or of the human realities that underlie even the most heinous crimes.

The movie is being shown in original Japanese with English subtitles. With my limited knowledge of the Japanese language, I discerned that quite a bit of liberty was taken with the English translations where many a times more western colloquialism was substituted for the Japanese even if perhaps a direct translation could have worked just the same. This resulted in dialogues that will be more familiar to any English speaking viewer but those expecting more Japanese nuances will probably not find very many.
